This PGY1 Pharmacy Residency aims to provide the candidate with knowledge regarding managing the pharmacy benefits in employee health plan. Focus is placed on developing skills to help design strategic interventions to provide clinically defensible ways to efficiently provide cost savings to plans through the pharmacy benefit and formulary design. Much emphasis is placed on critical appraisal of the medical literature and in applying evidence-based medicine skills in creating strategic drug policy. The resident will develop strong clinical skills, precept pharmacy students, facilitate Therapeutics case recitation or provide supplemental instruction, and provide instruction in the Evidence-based Medicine course. A residency project focusing on a managed care aspect in pharmacy will be required for the residency.  Participation in the Residency Research Certificate Program is encouraged.  Upon successful completion of the program, residents are awarded a residency certificate.

Evidence-based Prescription Drug Program Pharmacy & Therapeutics Committee (monthly, resident serves as Secretary of the Committee)
Drug Use and Evaluation Committee for the AR State Employees and Public School Employees (quarterly)

AR Medicaid Drug Utilization Review Board (quarterly)

Additional responsibilities/projects throughout the year include:

Provide at least 1 month of APPE on a general medicine service

  • Provide a semester of support in the Therapeutics courses (by providing supplemental instruction or leading case recitation)
  • Complete a medication use evaluation
  • Design and conduct a research project & present at a national meeting
  • Complete the UAMS College of Pharmacy Teaching Certificate Program
  • Complete the UAMS Research Certificate Program (optional)
  • Present a poster at the AR Association of Hospital Pharmacists
